Mon, April 11, 7:45 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 102 A

Abstract

Resilience is a concept that has been and continues to be used across different disciplines without a consensus on what it means. In this paper, we conceptualize a definition of resilience that highlights its ongoing process and the support networks of resilient Latino males in college, who are significantly underrepresented in postsecondary education. We employed grounded theory methods that specifically draw from a constructivist approach to analyze the data. The data were gathered from one-on-one in depth interviews with 24 participants, ranging from 45-90 minutes. Each of the 24 participants was interviewed three times to produce a total of 72 interviews. Emerging themes include; intersection of identities as points of challenge, social contexts of oppression, and environments of opportunity.
