Influences on Visual Spatial Rotation: STEM

Sat, April 9, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

SeaPerch is a robotics program that instructs students in how to build an underwater remotely operated vehicle following a STEM curriculum. This research study investigated if the students’ participating in the SeaPerch program developed strategies in manipulating three dimensional objects and in strengthening mathematical ability. The research study sample consisted of two groups of students; one that participated in the after-school SeaPerch program and the other that did not. The Vandenberg and Kuse Mental Rotation Test (MRT) was used to assess the effectiveness of the SeaPerch initiative. We found that MRT post assessment scores for students in the SeaPerch initiative increased significantly more than scores for students in the not participating in the program.
