Gendered Microaggression Inventory: Construction and Initial Validation

Sun, April 10, 8:15 to 10:15am, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 160

Abstract

Microaggressions (MA) are nuanced forms of insulting, disrespectful communications that occur during everyday exchanges. MA has recently been used to explain subtle sex-based discrimination on women. There’re several established intruments to measure racial MA, gendered racial MA, or gendered MA in clinical settings. Yet few instruments exist to assess sutble sex-based microaggression across various settings. The purpose of this study is to assess women’s perceptions of microaggressions against women in a range of settings. The sample consists of 299 women instructional, clinical, and research faculty from a large Midwestern land-university. A 28-item Gendered Microaggressions Inventory was developed for this study. The proposed study uses a series of statistic analyses to examine scale development, reliability and initial validation of this instrument.
