Rethinking Field Experiences: Preservice Art Education and Underserved Populations

Tue, April 12, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Three, Ballroom A

Abstract

How can art teacher training programs provide art opportunities to local communities? This presentation focuses on how my college art education program is rethinking field experiences to promote community engagement by providing meaningful artmaking opportunities to underserved and diverse K-12 student populations in innovative ways. Weaving my thoughts as the program coordinator with the pre-service teachers reflections and K-12 student artwork, this presentation introduces a qualitative research project where pre-service art teachers taught after-school and Saturday workshops in a non-profit urban arts organization, and in-school art workshops at an elementary school that cut its visual arts program.
