In an increasingly diverse society, the underrepresentation, high attrition rates, and multiple achievement discrepancies that continue to disadvantage students of color (SOC), especially those in STEM fields, remains critical. This paper addresses the leaky STEM pipeline for SOC, and specifically, that of Native Americans. The literature on SOC in STEM offers analysis of specific factors that influence success as well as provides major institutionally led intervention strategies and model programs. Taking the literature on American Indians in higher education and SOC in STEM, an overview of the methodological frameworks will be reviewed, including assessment of the literature in order to examine current research practices and future directions for increasing Native Americans in STEM.
