This paper highlights the relationship between creativity and assessment in arts education. Using a phenomenological approach the authors investigate how contemporary arts educators define, teach, learn, and assess creativity. Through a qualitative study that combines interviews, focus groups, and teacher artifacts significance is placed on the art teacher’s personal approach. By leading with the nuanced articulation of creativity in arts education the authors bring about a clear understanding of the importance of personal perspective as arts educators frame creativity and creative learning in their classroom; leading to a deeper inquiry of creativity assessment. Setting the stage for visions concerning creativity assessment as a critical advocacy and leadership practice in arts education.
