Visual Storying of Becoming and Belonging: A Cross-Cultural Negotiation of Asian American Students

Abstract

This study presents the benefits of understanding cultural identity of ethnic minority groups through community-based participatory action research (CBPAR). Conducting a CBPAR study with a Korean-American community school’s students, teachers and administrators, the author reveals the dynamic changes of recent Asian-American immigrants’ issues and their cultural identity conflicts in multicultural settings.
The paper contains: 1. How Asian-American students in their classroom or community view their cultural identities; 2. How a CBPAR study facilitates minority students to understand and voice their identities in multicultural settings; 3. What the meaningful implications of this study are for other minority groups, schools, community organizations and education research.
