Tue, April 12, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Three, Ballroom B

Abstract

This paper aims to contribute to the existing literature that link school segregation and curricular tracking, taking a further step toward the inclusion of the organizational dimension of this practice. In particular, I estimate for the Chilean case, measures of SES segregation depending if the allocation of student into academic and vocational tracks occurs between or within schools. The SES segregation measures are computed using the rank-order Information Theory Index that can be decomposed into segregation occurring between and within units. The results show that between schools tracking is more segregated by SES than within tracking in the private-voucher sector. In the public sector, where the level of segregation is lower, both type of tracking exhibit similar level of segregation.
