The Combined Effect of the Social Composition of the School and the City on Students' Achievements in Israel

Abstract

As localities play a central role in shaping educational policy and providing resources for education, students experience diverse school social context stemming from the socio-economic status of the school and the locality in which it is situated. The interaction of these two contexts on educational achievements is being examined in regard to Jewish secular secondary schools in Israel. The study included 16,555 students in 190 secondary schools located in 66 large cities. The combined school-city contexts have an effect in providing educational options as different matriculation certificates, but schools more than cities have an effect on tests achievements that are related to internal schools’ processes. The implications of these findings are discussed in terms of school segregation and enclave.
