This paper addresses the leadership needed to develop and sustain a district-wide community of practice. This research is important, because other research has shown that top-down implementation of communities of practice rarely work. This paper demonstrates that there are four leadership tasks that are critical to forming and sustaining a community of practice within a school district, and that by that leadership those districts can be led to become communities of practice.
