Freire in the Kitchen: Micro-Farming Grandmothers and the New South Africa

Sun, April 10, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section C

Abstract

This is a power point presentation of research I completed in the high density areas outside of Cape Town, South Africa. In particular this presentation reviews the notion that Freirean philosophy and pedagogy begins in the kitchens of poor women in the Global South. My work focused on a project, Abalimi (Harvest of Hope) in Gugulethu. This group of women, aged 60-90, manage the first Community Supported Agriculture program in South Africa.
This presentation represents part of my project to call for a fourth wave of feminism to take back the kitchen from corporated agribusiness concerns.
