A Critical Intersectional Study of Class, Student Diversity, and Social (In)Justice in Secondary Education

Sun, April 10, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section C

Abstract

Although injustices are experienced more often by students whose socio-cultural, material, physi(ologi)cal and/or geographical circumstances diverge from hegemonic norms around the world, the tendency in educational research is to focus much more on some intersectional dimensions of those dynamics than on others, this often marginalizing issues around social class and the political economy that forms its basis. By conducting an empirical study in three urban secondary schools, we aim to shed light on the quality and amount of influence said structural elements have on the (re)production of inequity and injustice in schooling and diverse youth’s lives. Our end goal is to inform educational policy and teaching and thus help transform them into more socially equitable and just endeavors.
