This phenomenological pilot study highlights the experiences of NCAA student-athletes from three South Atlantic universities who participate in athlete-specific Christian campus ministries. Informed by Sharon Daloz Parks’ model of faith development (2000), the study was designed to discover the essence of the athlete-specific Christian ministry experience and the meaning ascribed to that experience by ministry participants. Analysis of two semi-structured interviews, two large-group weekly meeting observations, and seven open-ended questionnaires revealed the following six preliminary themes: (a) building on previous involvement in religious groups; (b) a sense of community; (c) integration of faith and sport; (d) faith development; (e) sharing faith with others; and (f) a shift in identity. These findings will help inform future research on student-athlete spirituality.
