African-Centered Education: Solution to Black Miseducation

Mon, April 11, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section D

Abstract

Investigating African centered education in practice at both public (via charter) and private institutions requires deep cultural knowledge of people of African descent. The complexities of examining disenfranchised communities by using mainstream research paradigms has objectified and in some cases even overtly disrespected some cultural groups (Asante, 1990; Ani, 1994; Hilliard, 1997). This study presents the findings of nine years of studies of African centered schools and posits that African centered education may be the major solution for the miseducation of Black children.
