We used a modified version of the Constructivist Learning Environment Survey (CLES) to evaluate the effectiveness of integrating real workplace experience into the curriculum in terms of the CLES scales of Personal Relevance/Uncertainty, Critical Voice and Shared Control/Negotiation. Comparisons were made between 72 grade 9 business studies students who undertook workplace experience and 248 students in a comparison group in terms of the learning environment and students’ attitudes. Findings supported the positive impact of integrating real workplace experience into the curriculum in that between-group differences favoured workplace experience students on every learning environment and attitude scale, were statistically significant, and ranged in magnitude between 0.29 and 0.82 standard deviations.
