A Comparative Study of Canonical Correlation Between Student Mathematics and Science Achievements in TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study)

Sat, April 9, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 155

Abstract

Education initiatives, such as the Next Generation Science Standards, have placed more emphasis on the connections among STEM disciplines. However, there is little research to back the national effort with results from large-scale data analyses. The purpose of this research is to fill this void, and construct this important indicator to articulate student mathematics and science achievements using the baseline data from TIMSS. The comparative findings reconfirmed significant relationship between mathematics and science performances. Canonical correlation is introduced to address the non-additive nature of correlation coefficient and reduce Type I error in the result aggregation.
