In this presentation we share data from a masters-level literacy assessment course in which students responded to a multimodal representation of teaching with their own multimodal compositions. We argue that by incorporating media which are not typically considered “academic” – such as comics – into their pedagogy, teacher educators can foster critical inquiries into complex aspects of teaching. In particular, these multimodal literacy practices saw students taking on active questioning stances in ways that more traditional texts and aspects of the course did not. Finally, our data show that by including such texts in teacher education coursework, students are more open to incorporating such texts themselves in K-12 settings.
