Influencing Classroom Managers

Sat, April 9, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 158 A

Abstract

This descriptive study focuses on how to prepare and support beginning urban teachers in classroom management. I used mixed methods to examine teachers’ classroom management influences in an interim certification program (CERT). There were three types of influences that teachers reported: programmatic training and support, personnel from the teachers’ school, and learning from their classroom experience. Investigating influences across time periods revealed the decreasing impact of programmatic personnel while the classroom context remained a consistent impact. Teachers wanted practical and immediate advice specific to their classroom context. In addition, teachers developed by reflecting on relevant feedback from experience.
