Research has continually purported that institutions would be wise to develop academic conduct policies, as it would help preserve academic integrity, enforce compliance and aid in legal defensibility (Cizek, 2003). Unfortunately, developing good academic conduct policies can be quite challenging. Good academic conduct policies should have clearly articulated expectations and explicit examples of misconduct and the probable consequences for students that violate them. The purpose of this study was to introduce a method for determining reasonable sanctions for a number of academic misconduct offenses of varying degrees of severity. We utilize a variation of the Bookmarking procedure, a popular standard setting technique, to investigate empirical survey data and develop recommendations for policy.
