In this paper, we report on the first two years of a three-year experimental study of Advanced Placement (AP) science courses. The study is currently being conducted in 22 schools with 36 classes and over 1,200 students. We evaluate the fidelity of AP course implementation using multiple data sources, including student and teacher surveys; teacher and school administrator interviews; classroom observations; course syllabi; and student transcripts. This paper is the first to document the implementation and scale-up challenges associated with AP courses, which are currently offered in the majority of the nation’s schools.
