These APPLES Fell Far From the Tree: Learning to Teach in Diverse Communities

Abstract

After completing five courses, 40 English Language paraprofessionals enrolled in a teaching certification program demonstrated not only improvement in their instructional skills but also greater involvement in the broader context of their schools. This presentation describes how their roles changed as they’ve gained professional skills; and alerts us to potential barriers that may impede their full-integration into the school community.
