Maintained Inequality of Educational Opportunity in the Perspective of Second Chance

Sun, April 10, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section C

Abstract

This study examines the structural inequality of second chance for the re-entry into the race to the prestigious matriculation. I have a life history interview with a Korean international student who has experiences of the early study abroad, and analyze his learning journey for the better understanding on the significance and implications of the second chance issue. Through the research, I argue that there is a gap of second chance depending on students’ socioeconomic background; and this gap intensifies the unequal race of matriculation, thereby serving to maintain the different tracks toward hierarchically stratified postsecondary institutions in Korea. Specific attention is given to the role of economic capital in relation to the growing influence of education market.
