Standardized Tests as a Barrier for High­-Quality Teacher Candidates From Linguistically and Culturally Diverse Backgrounds

Abstract

This paper examines the unintended consequences of California's standardized testing policies for diverse students who wish to enter teacher education programs. These challenges contribute to the shortages of culturally and linguistically diverse teachers which exacerbates academic and social inequalities in schools. Through surveys and focus groups, the authors seek to understand the barriers that students face, and identify methods for lifting those barriers.
