The Effects of Superintendent Factors on Student Success in Rural South Texas

Tue, April 12, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Three, Ballroom A

Abstract

School districts need to hire a new superintendent and simultaneously increase accountability ratings. However, research has demonstrated that hiring a new superintendent may not be associated with higher achievement. School boards need to identify superintendents during the application process that can lead to student achievement as a proactive measure. This research determined that none of the three superintendent factors; Highest Degree Obtained, Certified Years as Educator in Texas, Certified Years as Superintendent in Texas significantly affected student achievement, graduation rate, students enrolling in higher education and/or students completing one year of higher education without remediation. This study is intended to provide school boards with information to be utilized during the interviewing process in identifying superintendents who may impact student achievement.
