Philanthropic Predictors and Inclinations Among Young, Diverse Alumni

Abstract

Today’s college campuses are more diverse ever, and current students are largely women and individuals of color. In contrast, alumni giving has been dominated by older, White males. The change in demographics suggests a need for change in fundraising practices. This mixed methods study of three universities in the California State University system explores the affiliation, affinity, belonging and engagement of young, diverse alumni. This study examines whether philanthropic perceptions are different by time, ethnicity, and campus designation and what factors influence current giving or inclination to provide philanthropic support to a person’s alma mater. Findings show affinity, belonging, and engagement significantly influence philanthropic support of one’s alma mater and relationships create connections that, if nurtured, lead to philanthropic support.
