Teaching Concept Learning for Conceptual Understanding

Mon, April 11, 11:45am to 1:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 158 B

Abstract

With emerging calls to teach for conceptual understanding from policies like the Common Core Content Standards, it is increasingly important to expose preservice teachers to pedagogical approaches based in theory that promote such teaching. In this presentation we will provide an overview of the foundational aspects of concept learning and teaching to affirm its relevance in the educational psychology classroom. We describe a three-hour lesson on concept learning, that can be adapted for other teachers of educational psychology. We follow this with a reflective analysis of lesson as experienced by the instructor and students through their exit slips. The presentation concludes with the significance of this work.
