Nonnative English-Speaking International Students' Learning Experiences With a Massive Open Online Course in a Regular College Classroom

Tue, April 12, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Three, Ballroom B

Abstract

The goal of this study was to examine nonnative English-speaking international college students’ experiences with a massive open online course (MOOC) in a regular college classroom. A case-study approach was employed to examine 12 Korean college students’ lived experience. We found that Korean students were interested in taking a MOOC offered by an internationally recognized university as part of a regular course at a university in Korea. Once they grew accustomed to the patterns of learning and teaching practices in the MOOC, their level of anxiety about using English decreased; and their motivation tended to influence their learning to a greater extent. Discussion of integrating a MOOC in a college course for nonnative English-speaking students is provided.
