The Choppy Waters of Academic Writing for Education Doctoral Students: Using Writing Scaffolds to Navigate the Journey

Tue, April 12, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Three, Ballroom A

Abstract

Students in education doctoral programs have many challenges, not the least of which is learning how to write as scholars. The purpose of this study was to describe and explain how working professional and international doctoral students responded to specific strategies designed to support their development as academic writers during the second year of their graduate program. Results of the Likert-scale and narrative survey indicated that explicit writing strategies contributed to the success and progress through the program of the 11 U.S. education doctoral students throughout the program.
