Discussions About Curriculum in Catholic Schools in the United States and the United Kingdom Since 1993

Sun, April 10, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section B

Abstract

This literature review sketches the landscape of the conversations about the curriculum in Catholic K-12 schools in the US and the UK since 1993. The main characteristics of this landscape were three. First, scholar conversations about the curriculum in Catholic schools have been few, particularly empirically based conversations. Second, most of the conversations have been led by US scholars with approaches to curriculum development that did not analyze the impact that current cultural and economic forces are having on the Catholic curriculum through competitiveness and effectiveness criteria. Third, there has been a disconnect between conversations about excellence and innovation, proposed mainly by US scholars, and discussions about the distinctiveness of Catholic curricula, suggested primarily from the UK.
