Both the experiences and perceptions of social presence and the sense of community are important factors for learning in online environments. Yet, limitations and inconsistencies in theoretical and methodological issues can be raised. This exploratory study draws on the phenomenological theory of social emotions from the German philosopher Max Scheler to investigate relational and emotional aspects of learning in social learning networks. A social network analysis of a learning management system combined with a survey among participants unveiled the importance of private communication among students. Moreover, we discovered a currently neglected type of social presence, namely negative emotional salience towards others, which distinguishes social presence from a sense of community.
