Developing Assessments for the Next Generation Science Standards (National Research Council, 2014) advocates assessing the practices, crosscutting concepts and core ideas of K-12 science by developing “multicomponent tasks.” We report on the development and testing of the ChemVlab+ modules that teach and assess high school stoichiometry and thermodynamics through interactive tasks with an embedded assessment system. Results indicate that the embedded assessments are highly reliable in measuring the overall constructs and at the level of sub-dimensions. This enables their use in a formative manner where the system reports to students on their personal progress in learning the topics as well as providing summary information to teachers to allow them to adapt instruction and thereby improve student learning.
