Leadership stability is important to school success, but little research has examined the relationship between principal quality and principal career transitions, which have different consequences to school organizations. By utilizing national data from 2011-2012 Schools and Staffing Survey and 2012-2013 Principal Follow-up Survey, we perform multinomial logit regressions with state fixed effect to analyze how instructional leadership, including setting school goals, supervising and evaluating instruction, and promoting school culture, affects the probability of different types of principal career transitions, while controlling for principal characteristics, school contexts and working conditions. The results from this paper could help policy makers gain a deeper understanding about the relationship between instructional leadership and principal career transitions so as to help retain effective principals.
