Learning to Comprehend Persuasive Texts: What Elementary Students Recall During Reading

Mon, April 11, 11:45am to 1:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section D

Abstract

Many K-5 students have difficulty comprehending text. Teachers, teacher educators, and researchers may benefit from a deeper understanding of children’s comprehension development. This study examined on-grade-level elementary students’ comprehension of persuasive texts. Forty second through fifth graders’ recalls were analyzed for individual and grade-level patterns. Students exhibited poor recall of persuasive texts, and they under-attended to persuasive texts’ graphics. Their recalls may inform ongoing conversations about addressing inequities in students’ comprehension in the elementary grades.
