Latina/o Students, Families, and Their Teachers Reassembling Visions of STEM College and Career Readiness

Tue, April 12, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Three, Ballroom B

Abstract

We use the example of our Language-rich Inquiry Science with English Language Learners through Biotechnology (LISELL-B) project to explore how Latino/a and Karen students, families, their teachers and a research team worked together to question, challenge, reimagine and take ownership of a more democratic notion of college and career readiness in the context of the southeastern U. S. Working within and beyond classroom contexts we sought to challenge the normative goals of schooling through a multidirectional funds of knowledge approach. We use actor network theory and a critical pedagogy of place to explore how our project mobilized human and non-human actors to assemble (successfully and unsuccessfully) an empowering and critically oriented interpretation of college and career readiness.
