Examining Literacy Teacher Educators' Research Interests and Professional Backgrounds: Finding Their Vision and Enacting Their Beliefs

Sat, April 9, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D

Abstract

This small-scale study investigated six literacy teacher educators using a grounded theory approach. Literacy teacher educators play a significant role in teaching literacy. The study shows that the research backgrounds and personal interests of literacy teacher educators greatly influence the development of their literacy courses and their pedagogy, to the extent that many areas of literacy are often overlooked. The educational significance of this research is that teacher educators need a more expansive knowledge of literacy, beyond their personal interests and research backgrounds in order to meet the demands of the 21st century. The practices and pedagogy of literacy teacher educators will continue to play a key role in the learning and development of future teachers.
