Significant emphasis has recently been placed on what (student) teachers can learn in and from their own practice by analyzing and reflecting upon their videotaped lessons. In this study, we followed three student teachers (ST) during their field placement, who also participated in video clubs designed to engage them in cycles of guided reflection around two areas of instruction. A rich data corpus consisting of videotaped lessons, interviews, reflection journals, and videotaped sessions helped construct the portraits of the three cases; cross-case analysis then revealed common patterns and notable differences in their learning. We discuss these findings in a reflective mode, by identifying dilemmas inherent in using video clubs when working with STs in the context of their field placement.
