This work aims to present some challenges that are put to education from the perspective of socio-environmental struggles undertaken by popular social movements in Latin America during the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). The method is document analysis and the theoretical framework is the Critical Theory and Brazilian authors of the Critical Environmental Education field. We discuss 1) the epistemology of popular struggles for access to natural resources in Latin America; 2) the impacts of the "new extractivist" development model; 3) the similarities between the document for the DESD and other UN documents for education in developing countries and its critiques; 4) the alternative proposals to ESD that emerge in the Brazilian panorama.
