Abstract
This study examined the potential impact of Advanced Placement (AP) programs on academic math achievement via math interest using a marginal structural model. The total sample in this study was comprised of 6,165 cases from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS: 09). We found that the indirect effect of taking AP math programs on math achievement through motivation was not statistically significant. This implies that students may not receive the benefits of either achievement or interest in math by taking AP math programs. The implications are discussed in in terms of improving AP programs to meet the needs of talented students.
