Design-Based Methodologies: Positioning Within a Mixed Methods Framework

Sat, April 9, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Marriott Marquis, Floor: Level Two, Marquis Salon 4

Abstract

Mixed methods research and design-based research are two emerging research approaches, with many apparent similarities in foundations, purposes, and procedures. Despite the growing popularity of both approaches, prominent mixed methods literature has not incorporated design-based methodologies, nor has design-based research connected with the mixed methods research community. This methodological discussion makes connections between the two approaches by examining six design-based research studies using a mixed methods framework. Each of the studies incorporated both quantitative and qualitative data and, minimally, mixed the data types in discussion. It appears that design-based research can be conceptualized as mixed methods research with high integration, equal priority, and iterative timing. Terminology varies widely across content-area and methodological research communities. Implications for research communities are discussed.
