The study examined whether the integration of dynamic computer visualization (DCV) impacts student’s performance on an online instrument assessing students’ understanding of osmosis. College students from three large classes (N=640) participated in the study through an online system. We found: (a) the psychometric properties of the instrument with DCVs were reliable with good construct validity, (b) students with exposure to DCV before they took the assessment performed better than those without, (c) students’ time spent on the DCVs significantly contributed to their performance, and (d) the patterns of how students use and perceive DCVs in the assessment. Educational implications and significance of this study is also discussed.
