The Work of Middle School Counselors: A Multilevel Study of a Fully Implemented Comprehensive School Counseling Program

Mon, April 11, 4:30 to 6:00pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Room 145 B

Abstract

Nationally aligned school counseling programs are essential to fulfilling the mission of public schools, but this systematic, outcome-based model that serves all students is a paradigmatic shift in practice. Our research is a multi-level study of a comprehensive school counseling program in an urban district in Wisconsin. In particular, we focus on the work of middle school counselors and how their work is supported by curriculum, building administration, and district-level leadership. We explore themes of connection and leadership in order to understand the theories of action employed in the reform, which has fundamentally changed daily practice. The insights gained from our study can inform other counselors, leaders, researchers, and policymakers as they work to reform school counseling programs.
