Exploring Multiplicative and Algebraic Thinking Through Algonquin Beadwork

Sat, April 9, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Marriott Marquis, Floor: Level Two, Marquis Salon 17

Abstract

In this study we explored the potential of using Algonquin looming as the basis for designing mathematics instruction. Working with members of the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation, we co-designed and delivered lessons in a Grade 3 classroom, and documented the mathematical thinking that emerged. Results indicate that the activity supported students’ understanding of multiplicative and algebraic thinking.
