The leadership literature establishes distributed leadership as a goal for both developing and seasoned educational leaders. Standard conceptions of distributed leadership feature interdependent actors, but overlook the opportunities necessary for these leaders to fulfill their roles. Previously, we addressed “opportunity” in the context of learning, (XXXX, 2015). Here, we analyze “opportunity” as a prerequisite for distributed leadership across the educational ecosystem and identify salient factors for educational improvement and success. Developing a theory of opportunity in the context of distributed leadership produces a more democratic practice of education and education leadership and creates constructs that education actors, including the broader public, can use to improve education for the public good.
