This paper presents an analysis of educational technology research published in two reputable journals, the Educational Technology Research and Development (ETRD) journal from the USA and the Journal of Educational Technology (JET) from South Korea. Two different comparisons are presented. First, the goals and methodologies of the research studies published in ETRD over two six-year periods separated by two decades (from 1989-1994 and from 2009-2014) were analyzed to detect how these factors changed over time. Second, the goals and methodologies of ETRD and JET were compared for years 2009-2014. Results indicate interesting trends in the goals and methods employed in educational technology research, yielding important implications for future research directions and preparing graduate students to conduct educational technology research.
