This qualitative study examined 12 graduate students’ perceptions and experiences with connectedness in an asynchronous, online distance degree program specific to advisors, instructors, students, and the program. Consensual qualitative research was used to collect data using open-ended questions and for analysis using an inductive process, while utilizing core and audit teams to make consensual decisions. Four conclusions were drawn. First, most participants’ desired connectedness did not change while enrolled in the program. Second, the central experience that made most participants feel connected was quality communication. Third, many participants did not have disconnecting experiences, for those who did, they were due to limited or impersonal interactions. Finally, both students and faculty need to put forth effort to feel connected.
