Working with scientists has been suggested as an effective way for high school students to learn science more authentically. However, scientists also express a need to improve their teaching and communication skills in order to work with students. The purpose of the study is to introduce a pedagogical tool, cogenerative dialogues (cogens), to help improve their communications and investigate high school students’ experience about cogens with scientists. Four main salient experiences were identified in the phenomenographic study: (a) a respectful and safe space to understand different perspectives; (b) addressing issues to improve science internship teaching and learning together; (c) fostering stronger relationship between scientists and high school students; and (d) demonstrating care and patience for high school students’ science learning.
