Using qualitative methods, this research examines the congruence between the public statements and true intent of international student services (ISS) units. By analyzing the mission statements, public dissemination of information, and programmatic curricula of the ISS units at the fourteen public universities with the largest international student populations, we conclude that these universities emphasize business affairs over student programming. These findings are significant given that all ISS units in the sample purport mission statements and programmatic objectives as all-encompassing liaisons for international students to acculturate to American university life. Our implications provide insight for student affairs administrators to create and promote a more holistic extra-curricular environment for international students that addresses their multitude of unique concerns.
