Integrating Common Core State Standards in Teacher Preparation Programs: Impacts and Insights

Abstract

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were developed to create a set of college- and career-readiness standards that could be used across state educational systems. As P-12 districts work to implement new curriculum and prepare students for these new standards, there is an increased need for higher education institutions, and particularly teacher preparation programs, to also align coursework to the standards. This study outlines the efforts to implement CCSS across a large, public, urban university system. Reports were collected from colleges engaged in the work and faculty were surveyed to assess their familiarity with and confidence in using CCSS.
