Cultural Leadership Education for Military Leaders in Irregular Warfare

Sat, April 9, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Exhibit Hall D Section C

Abstract

Recent conflicts have highlighted the importance of effective training and education for successful counterinsurgency (COIN) operations in an irregular or hybrid conflict environment. This study analyzed how senior Marine officers perceive the success of COIN (and other irregular warfare) training and education during their careers. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three currently-serving Marine lieutenant colonels, each with recent combat experience and over 20 years of service. Key findings included a shared opinion of overall mission success, the importance of retaining hard-won lessons within the constraints of the current force drawdown, and the need to inculcate cultural awareness, creativity, and nimbleness in all Marines. Future implications require further expertise in regional and cultural studies through appropriate training and education.
