Classroom-Level Data Use: Mapping the Sub- and Microprocesses of One Teacher's Practice

Sat, April 9, 4:05 to 6:05pm, Marriott Marquis, Floor: Level Four, Independence Salon F

Abstract

This naturalistic instrumental case study investigated how a teacher with expertise in data use converted classroom level student performance data and used this information for multiple purposes including instructional decision making. Rigorous qualitative methodologies (i.e., think-aloud protocols, interviews, observations, document analysis) were used to understand and document the processes he engaged in to use data to make decisions. Findings suggested that this teacher transformed raw data (i.e., student work) into multiple forms of organized data that could be deployed for a variety of purposes and in doing so engaged in a variety of data use processes. This investigation complements and extends the extant literature by examining how an expert teacher engaged in data use for his daily practice.
